Addressing the Readability Criterion of a Website

The readability criterion is very important for a website. If the viewer is unable to read the text, then is the website actually conveying its message? As important are the words, design of the text is equally important. From fonts, to its layout, it is important to compose them on to the page to make them visually more appealing. A professional website design uses text elements that would increase its appeal.

Choosing the Font
There are an infinite number of fonts available. It is overwhelming. It is important to select typeface like a particular font to highlight, and another for the body. Too many font styles can be distracting. It is important that the main body begin with sans serif. It is easily readable and they start to lose their serifs depending on the screen resolution, font and color contrast.
Determining Typecast
The body is the most viewed area and so it should be easily digestible on desktops, tablets or mobiles. Different styles can be utilized but large blocks of bold and italics are difficult to comprehend.
Stay away from Hyphenation
Hyphenation is ugly. Period. It is as ineffective and confusing. It occurs when the sentence is split at the end of the line, causing it to crawl over the second line. It is used in newspapers. The thinking was to make the text space properly in each line. Sometimes justifying the text can place the designer in odd spacing requirements. Hyphens should be reserved for words that need them, like the modifiers. This way the text would appear crisp and professional.
Justifying
Although still used in print, a justified sentence fills the line completely from the left margin to the right. Each line is of the same width. This closes the space between the words and thereby leaves undistributed space between each word. Not visually appealing though. In the English language, the left justification is most common with a frayed right edge. This appears friendly and something that can be easily read.
Color
The appropriate color will provide the necessary emphasis on a group of words or block of text. The colors should be in sharp contrast to its background making it easily visible.
When deciding on all these factors, it is best to think about the audience. The audience will be affected with the visuals and therefore everything chosen should influence the designer.
